Snapshots and backups
Take, list, restore, copy and delete snapshots of your VMs, and start new VMs from them.
A snapshot is a saved copy of a VM's disk at a point in time. You manage snapshots in two places: the Snapshots tab on a VM's page, and the account-wide Backups & Snapshots page in the sidebar, which lists snapshots for all your VMs.
- Snapshots: create, read the status, delete.
- Restore a VM: roll a VM's disk back to a snapshot.
- Create a VM from a snapshot
- Copy a snapshot
A snapshot covers the VM's own disk. Extra data disks are separate disks and are not included.
Snapshots are taken and stored by the cloud provider. A new snapshot shows Pending until the provider finishes it, and restore, copy and create-from-snapshot are only available once it is Completed. Snapshots are kept in the same region as the VM, so keep your own off-site copies of data you can't afford to lose.
