Snapshots

Create a snapshot, understand its status and delete it.

A snapshot is a point-in-time copy of the VM's disk. It is taken by the cloud provider and stored there.

Create a snapshot

  1. Open the VM and choose the Snapshots tab. The VM must be running or stopped.
  2. In Create snapshot enter a Name.
  3. Choose Create Snapshot. It appears with the status Pending and changes to Completed on its own, usually within a few minutes. The size is filled in by the provider.

Only one snapshot of a VM can be in progress at a time.

What a snapshot costs

Snapshots are a paid, prepaid add-on charged per GB. Before you create one, the form shows the price per GB and the most it can cost (your VM's disk size). Your wallet must cover that maximum. The charge itself is taken when the snapshot is complete, for its real size, and it renews every 30 days with the same overdue rules as a VM. If it is unpaid, restoring and copying are blocked and the snapshot is deleted after a grace period. Each snapshot shows its price and next renewal date; use Renew now to pay early or to lift the block. A copy is a new snapshot and is charged the same way.

Statuses

Status Meaning
Pending The provider is taking the snapshot.
Completed Ready to use. Only completed snapshots can be restored, copied or used to start a VM.
Failed The provider could not take it. You can delete it and try again.

The table shows each snapshot's name, size, status and creation date.

Backups & Snapshots in the sidebar lists the snapshots of every VM you own, with the VM's hostname, so you can act on them without opening each VM.

Delete a snapshot

Choose Delete on a snapshot's row, from either the VM's tab or the Backups & Snapshots page, and confirm. The snapshot is also removed at the provider. Deleting a snapshot never touches the running VM itself.

A snapshot of a running VM captures the disk as it is at that moment. For databases, stop the service or the VM first for a fully consistent copy.
