Delete a VM

Permanently remove a VM, with a type-to-confirm safeguard.

Deleting a VM really terminates the server at the provider. It cannot be undone and the data on its disk is gone.

Delete

You can delete a VM that is running or failed.

  1. Open the VM and choose Delete.
  2. Type the VM's hostname exactly as shown. The Delete VM button stays disabled until it matches.
  3. Choose Delete VM. The status changes to Deleting and then Deleted.

Once deleted, the VM's page stays available for reference with a note that it no longer exists at the provider, and all action buttons are disabled.

Data disks are deleted too

If the VM has data disks, they are permanently deleted together with it, and so is everything on them. The delete dialog lists them before you confirm. A VM that is stopped for non-payment and then deleted by the platform loses its data disks the same way.

What to do first

  • Keep a copy of anything important. Deleting is not the same as stopping.
  • If you want to keep a public IP address for a replacement VM, reserve it before deleting. See Static IPs.
  • Snapshots you created stay in your account until you delete them yourself.
