Manage a VM
Start, stop and reboot a VM, and understand every status it can show.
Open a VM from Virtual Machines. Its page has an Overview tab (vCPU, RAM, disk, OS image, price, creation and provisioning dates) and tabs for Snapshots, Firewall, Network and Console. The action buttons sit at the top, and the VM's public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are shown under its name.
Live status and addresses
The Overview tab asks the provider for the VM's current state each time you open it. It shows the provider's own status, how long the VM has been running, and its public IPv4, IPv6 and any floating IP. Choose Refresh to check again.
Live CPU, memory and disk usage graphs aren't offered yet for every provider. When they aren't, the Overview tab says so. Inside the VM, tools such as
top,freeanddfshow the same information.
Start, stop and reboot
| Action | Available when | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Start | The VM is stopped | Brings it back online. |
| Stop | The VM is running | Powers it off. Its disk and settings are kept. |
| Reboot | The VM is running | Restarts it. |
These run straight away without a confirmation, because they are reversible. Buttons that do not apply to the current status are disabled with a hint explaining why.
Statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pending, Provisioning | The order was accepted and the VM is being built. |
| Running | Up and reachable. |
| Stopped | Powered off. Start it to use it again. |
| Starting, Stopping, Rebooting | A power action is in progress. |
| Resizing, Reinstalling, Restoring | A change to size, operating system or disk is in progress. The VM returns to Running when it finishes. |
| Deleting, Deleted | The VM is being torn down, and once finished it no longer exists at the provider. |
| Failed | The VM could not be created. The reason is shown on its page. |
While a change is in progress, the page checks for an update every few seconds and switches to the final status by itself. You can leave and come back.
Resize, reinstall and delete are covered on their own pages: Resize, Reinstall the OS, Delete.
