Resize a VM
Change a VM's vCPU and RAM with two independent pickers.
Resize
The VM must be running.
- Open the VM and choose Resize.
- Pick the new vCPU count and the new RAM. The two pickers are independent, so you can raise one without touching the other.
- Look at Resulting plan. It shows the actual plan your choice maps to, with its specs and its monthly price in Rial.
- Choose Resize. The VM shows Resizing and returns to Running when finished.
How the choice becomes a plan
You do not build a custom size and pay per unit. Every VM runs on a real provider plan, so your vCPU and RAM choice is matched to the closest real plan that covers both values. If no plan reaches that combination, the dialog says so and asks for a smaller value. If the result is your current plan, it tells you that too.
What you pay when you resize
Before you confirm, the dialog shows the amount for the rest of the current 30-day period. Upsize: the difference between the new and old price, prorated for the days left, is taken from your wallet first, before the provider is asked. If the provider cannot resize the VM, it is refunded automatically, and if your wallet is short nothing happens. Downsize: the prorated difference is credited to your wallet once the resize has succeeded. Your next renewal uses the new price.
Limits
- Same provider and region. Resizing never moves a VM to a different provider or region, only to a different size on the same one.
- No shrinking on OVHcloud. On OVHcloud VMs only upgrades are supported. Choosing a smaller vCPU, RAM or disk is blocked with an explanation. AWS and Alibaba Cloud VMs can be resized down as well as up.
Depending on the provider, a resize may briefly interrupt the VM. Save your work and expect the status to change to Resizing first.
